Evaluation Question Two (2 Draft)

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

When evaluating my aimed audience type and their social groups it was essential to keep this element in mind during the design and construction of this magazine. The types of artists I would use and the tone in my article were influenced by my chosen audience type. I used the website UK tribes as I made decisions on how I should represent the genre of kpop and its audience in my magazine. I decided on what style of artist I should include in my magazine- for example I decided to steer into the main stream artists but present them in a way that appealed to English fans- this would mean I would steer away from the commercialism and over stylized representation they adopt in magazines in Korea/ Asia and therefore I would challenge it. By doing this I felt that if any of my readership wished to look at the artists as icons or idols it would be easy for them to achieve the look or style. In terms of appearance I managed for them to wear makeup and clothes of a stylized yet simplistic nature. I thought that the simplicity would help for the readers to relate and engage a bit more as they looked like things that could be worn by everyday people as they convey an idea of being ‘cool’ and ‘laid back’. As well as these conventions the shots I used and directed my models to appear in were challenging the usual poses as they were more animate and interactive by expressing very many of their emotions. I believed that this relaxed approach would help for my audience to connect with the content more easily.

My audience is 15-20 year old/ students who are obviously willing to be defined as liking the kpop music genre. When applying the age concept to the conventions of my magazine I had to keep in mind the ability to attain a regular readership and how much it would cost for students. To have to identify with people of this age range I would have to use artists and therefore models who managed to display a connection of this age range. For my models I used some of my sister’s friends from Brighton university. At a university I knew I would be able to find a wide range of diversity as well as age. The models I used were 20-21 years old so it means that they are acting as a form of idol or icon as they are at the cusp of my intended aimed for age range.

In conclusion by applying all of these elements whilst taking in consideration the concept of the audience I managed to connect with my intended audience/ social groups as much I had prepared or thought to do.
