Evaluation Question Five (5 Draft)

How did you attract/address your audience?

My magazine is aimed at 15-20 year olds (young adults or older teenagers) and evaluating the design for my magazine which eventually could identify, address and attract an audience of this age with the interests in the kpop genre of music was something that needed to be considered to a great extent. Because I used both a female and male model I feel as though I am therefore not ruling out any genders for my audience as it was my overall intention to make this magazine not gender focused. Because I used my male model as my main focus I feel I did not conform to Alavarado’s theory of the sexual appeal to the unknown of the Exotics. I tried to deter from making the models look ‘curious’ and therefore offer a sexual appeal due to the unknown element of culture as it would not be considered as favorable to people who identify themselves with the kpop genre. People who listen to kpop find it difficult to publicly identify themselves with the genre as it is anyway so the magazine needed to be something respectful and something that doesn’t just appeal to the general public because of a sexual element. To direct my models as animate and inviting appeals to my audience in a sense that the kpop genre is very outgoing. In continuation the style I decided to dress my models in appeals to my audience as they are plain clothes that could be bought or imitated if any of my audience decided to look upon my models as idols of fashion icons. I used my research of female and male style whilst evaluating what to wear and I decided not to conform to the stereotypical concept of women being dressed in innocent and Aegyo styled clothing thus giving me time to look at other/ real icons within the kpop industry and plan what was to be worn during their shoots. I felt that not venturing down the lines of the commercialized Aegyo section allows my audience who is predominantly female to connect easily to the female icon/ model more. The poses I directed to be performed by my chosen models where very respectable but animate at the same time and I feel that the expressions and feelings conveyed in these photos allow it for my audience to be captivated as both of their personalities (and therefore the genre) are shown. On my contents page I used a joint photo shoot to show a connection with my two artists and I therefore continued this on to the double page spread as content. The poses taken by the two show a deep and friendly connection which is something that is edged to be displayed in the kpop industry and therefor fans/ my audience would be addressed by this as it holds an appealing aspect of the genre. My content is clearly displayed in my contents page and this aids to address the audience as it allows them to pick apart what aspect of content attracts them and what they choose to read- a short summation is offered also to allow them to make a further deduction. In terms of my double page the tone of the article would be important in order to attract my audience- I feel I did this through lexical choice of jargon and metalanguage which could simply only be understood by fans or people who identify themselves with the genre. Obviously conventions such as grammar, spelling and discourse structure were things that I feel tackled well in terms of my audience and readers view. I did not wish to make my article connote an element of absolute formality as that would not initiate a connection between the reader and the genre as it may be too difficult to understand or feel addressed by as it may alienate them. I feel I tackled this through use of syntax and slight elements of nonstandard English.
